The Guide to Academic Careers in the United States: A Short Guide to Future Professors.

The United States has been a world leader in higher education, research and innovation. A professorship in this context is not an occupation to scholars and students all over the world but a journey of teaching, discovery and long-term influence in an intellectual sense.

The careers in academics in the U.S are very attractive because of availability of best research institutions, good wages and good funding opportunities. Universities promote interdisciplinary cooperation and provide organized development in terms of tenure systems, which allows academic professionals to match their research interests with their teaching.

The path normally starts with a PhD and then post doctoral research to gain experience, publications and networks. Academic entry normally begins with an assistant professor position, which is an activity that includes teaching, research, publication, and acquisition of grants. Following a serious tenure review, faculty are promoted to an associate professor, with job security and leadership duties, which is succeeded by becoming a full professor where one heads major research and impacts academic policy.

Academic roles may be of different types. Tenure-track jobs offer security and solid career advancement, whereas non-tenure positions, like lecturers and adjunct professors, are more teaching oriented and insecure. Teaching and research are balanced in most positions, but the percentage is dependent on the institution.

Remuneration is also competitive, particularly in STEM and the salaries range between approximately 70,000-150,000 to 200,000 and above depending on rank and institution. The U.S. also offers opportunities to international academicians so long as they possess a good profile in research, experience in teaching and satisfy the visa requirement.

The industry is, however, very competitive. Obstacles are limited tenure-track opportunities, the need to publish, and the need to acquire funding for the research. Strategic publishing, networking, grant-writing skills and good academic profile are keys to success.

In short, the academic career in the United States has unique opportunities to people who are dedicated to development and innovation. It is a highly rewarding journey regardless of the obstacles since the opportunities to make a contribution to the global knowledge and influence the generations to come are regarded as significant ones.
