A Brief Contingent to APA and Chicago citation styles.
Citation styles play a critical role in academic writing since they promote honesty, openness and due credit to original writers. Citation allows authors to allow the reader to follow the ideas, confirm facts, and conduct more research. The most popular two styles are the APA (American Psychological Association) and Chicago (Chicago Manual of Style).
The two styles have different structures and usage despite both having an object of preventing plagiarism and giving credit. APA style has become common in social sciences like psychology, education and business. It is written in the format of author-date, the name of the author and the year of publication are placed in the text. This allows it to be easy to determine the level of recentness of a source. Another similarity between APA and MLA is the use of a reference list and a preference of basic formatting such as initials of authors and sentence case of titles.
Conversely, Chicago style is employed in such humanities as history and literature. It provides two systems and the most common one is the Notes and Bibliography format. This is the style that employs footnotes or endnotes rather than in-text citations and thus, it provides more elaboration without disrupting the central text. Chicago also has the bibliography and has the full author names and title case format.
The biggest distinction is in the citation format in which APa has in-text citation, whereas Chicago uses footnotes. APA is short and simple where Chicago is flexible and elaborate.
Conclusively, the two styles are significant in academic writing. The decision to select one of them is based on the discipline and principles. Acquiring these styles does not only enhance the quality of writing, but credibility and academic integrity as well.
