A Doctor Who Changed Healing.
Introduction: The Visionary Doctor Who Challenged Traditional Medicine Few figures in medical history have elicited as much debate as Samuel Hahnemann. Born at a time when medicine was primitive, cruel, and ultimately deadly; he proposed a medicine of gentleness, the unique nature of each person, and the ability of the body to heal itself. This approach developed into homeopathy, a system of medicine still widely used globally today. What made Hahnemann revolutionary wasn't necessarily his remedies, but his vision: at a time when the approach to medicine was one of the most aggressive of any medical history; he turned it around to that of gentle, caring treatment of the patient-an aspect that is being recognized more and more in modern medicine. The medical approaches to treatment at that time included all methods ranging from extreme bloodletting, purging of the body, and harmful drugs such as mercury, all of which didn't serve to heal the body, but to deplete it further. The science was weak, there were no clinical trials and little attention was paid to the scientific method or even a code of ethics in medicine, but practice instead rested solely upon traditions that existed for years. These methods brought the doctor away from the patients, however after the disgusted doctor took a step away from practice; he returned with a medicine based on observation and testing of the body as well as the notion that "like cures like," meaning that which can cause symptoms in a healthy body can cure the same symptoms in an unhealthy body. In homeopathy there are many different remedies to treat varying symptoms, although in all cases, it depends upon the nature of the ailment and the specific person being treated so there is individualized treatment for everyone based upon physical, emotional, and environmental elements of each patient. The principle of minimal dosing also was a key part of Hahnemann's medicine as it emphasized safety while stimulating healing. He showed patients care in the most intimate sense by listening, caring, and understanding the patients as individuals, which has brought a whole new meaning to the patient doctor relationship and is a central component of modern medicine today. Homeopathy has always been somewhat controversial among the scientific community but through his theories of homeopathic medicine, observation, and patient care, Hahnemann left an undeniable mark on the practice of medicine.
