A Doctor With New Ideas About Healing.

A Revolutionary of Medicine Samuel Hahnemann has been called one of the most controversial yet influential individuals in the history of medicine. At a time when medicine was an invasive and at times dangerous practice, he brought to the forefront an entirely new outlook on how to practice medicine: gentleness, an individualized treatment approach, and faith in the natural healing capacity of the body. His methods form the basis of the practice known as Homeopathy, and he remains one of the most widely known and used of all physicians. Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, medicine was a system that often included procedures like blood-letting, purging, and administering poisons like mercury which weakened the patient and did nothing to bring about healing. Scientific method, ethics and clinical trials were largely missing and doctors based their practices on old traditions rather than observation and evidence. In this practice, Hahnemann came to question the existing system. Frustrated with what he experienced he even gave up practice for a while before he eventually came back into it with an entire new concept based on observation, experiment and reason. His basic premise was based on "like cures like" (similia similibus curentur) – where a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can, when diluted, cure similar symptoms in a sick person. He shifted the perspective from simply healing a disease to understanding what the sick person's disease truly was. Furthermore, no two people are the same: he took into consideration symptoms of the body as well as the emotional symptoms and environment of the person. He stressed the minimum dose and its ability to stimulate healing while causing minimal to no harm, similar to our modern worries about the effects and side effects of medical treatment. As a firm believer in observation, he originated provings (testing substances on healthy human subjects) and documented the effect the substance caused-this was, in a primitive form, close to how clinical trials are done today. While science was one of the central pillars of Hahnemann's new medicine, he also succeeded in bringing some humanity to the practice of medicine by emphasizing the importance of listening attentively, and showing genuine empathy and respect for his patients.
