A medical revolution: Samuel Hahnemann.

One of the most controversial, yet influential men in the history of medicine, Samuel Hahnemann pioneered a completely new and refreshing philosophy to medicine at a time when most treatments were harsh, intrusive, and often more detrimental than the illness being treated. This radical idea has formed the basis of Homeopathy, a branch of medicine that continues to be practiced today, throughout the world.

The advent of Homeopathy was not just another new way of practicing medicine but was in essence, the challenging of the medical dogma at the end of the 18th, and beginning of the 19th century. Instead of the traditionally aggressive medical interventions of the era, Hahnemann sought to place the patient as the center of treatment, an concept, which although not revolutionary to the 21 st century medical profession, was of paramount importance in the 18 th.

It is necessary to provide some context into the medical practices of the time, in order to better appreciate his ideas. Medical treatments of the time included such remedies as bloodletting, purging and even poisons, in the form of mercury, and did not often serve to heal the patient but rather to drain them further. The development of a scientific methodology to medical practice and clinical trials, was yet to come, and treatments were mostly based on long established practice.
