A New Philosophy of Medicine: Samuel Hahnemann.

Samuel Hahnemann was certainly one of the most contentious but ultimately revolutionary figures of all time in medicine. In a time when medicine was often brutal and debilitating rather than curing and helping. Hahnemann developed a medical ideology of gentleness, individualization and reliance upon the natural capabilities of the body. From this ideology sprung Homeopathy which still stands today throughout the globe.

The practice of medicine in the late 18th and early 19th centuries consisted of remedies which were bloodletting, purgatives and dangerous and toxic compounds such as mercury which in no way aided and rather weakened the sufferer, there was no structure to the medical discipline relying more on tradition than science. It was during this time that Hahnemann challenged what were accepted as universal principles of treatment and advocated for a new, more scientific methodology for approaching disease and patient.

His central tenet, "like cures like" (similia similibus curentur) proposed that in very low doses substances which produced the disease state in a healthy person can be used to treat a suffering person. This shifted the emphasis away from the illness to treating the patient's symptoms.

Hahnemann argued that every individual is unique and should be treated holistically (physically, mentally, environmentally) using the minimum possible dose to reduce side-effects and harm.

He championed diligent observation and experiment developing methods like 'provings' to test the effects of substances on a healthy person, initiating many aspects of research into medicines and their effects. His most significant contribution however was the 'humanization of medicine' moving the emphasis away from the condition being treated and treating the individual instead, prefiguring the 'patient-centered' care approach of modern medicine.

Although there is contention around his ideas within the scientific community of today it can be argued that he had an immense impact on medical thinking with regards to principles such as observation and treating the individual.
