A New Way Of Healing Samuel Hahnemann.

Introduction: A Medical Revolutionary. Perhaps one of the most disputed but most influential figures in the medical profession, Samuel Hahnemann is known for his introduction of an entirely different philosophy to medicine at a time when remedies were harsh, violent and even lethal. This new approach, based upon the gentle handling, individual treatment of patients and on the body’s own ability to heal, formed the basis of Homeopathy and is used across the globe today. However, Hahnemann’s contributions went further than a novel method of treatment, they also fundamentally questioned many principles of the 18th/early 19th century medicine of his time. Back then medicine was characterized by the excessive and damaging practice of bloodletting, purging and the administration of poisonous remedies such as mercury, that were designed more to incapacitate rather than cure. Medical practices relied heavily on traditional values, but not scientific evidence and tests, or ethical considerations for patient well-being, and it was this lack of scientific validation and harsh methodology that disgusted Hahnemann enough to relinquish his profession briefly, but then to embark on research to develop a system of medicine based on rationalism, experimentation and diligent observation. This led to his theory of “like cures like”- which basically stated that substances that can induce a disease in a healthy person will also cure the similar disease when administered in small doses, leading the physician to treat the particular set of symptoms the individual is suffering from, as opposed to the illness alone. Equally influential was Hahnemann’s philosophy on individualized treatment. He strongly believed that even two individuals who present the same disease symptom pattern cannot both be treated with the same remedy, and further proposed that the least quantity of a remedy possible should be used, to stimulate a reaction in the body, but without causing unnecessary side-effects to the patient, a concept which aligns very much with the issues surrounding medical treatment today. Hahnemann is also known for the more humanistic aspects of his medical philosophy, showing concern and empathy towards his patients, and taking care to listen to them and to consider their overall well-being. While Homeopathy continues to be debated in a scientific context, Hahnemann’s principles of patient centred care, observation, the concept of side-effects and treating the individual have become paramount. Ultimately, Samuel Hahnemann left more than just a new form of medicine.
