A Pioneer in Medicine: Samuel Hahnemann.
Samuel Hahnemann is the most hotly debated yet influential medical pioneer. During a time where medical practice was not gentle and certainly not humane, he developed an all together different medical approach: one that was based on being mild and considerate and one which utilized the body’s own ability to heal itself. This new methodology was the bedrock of homeopathy, which is still practiced in the world today.
Hahnemann did more than just come up with a new way to treat. In fact, his philosophy attacked many aspects of 18th and early 19th century medicine. He changed the focus from being aggressive and tied to old ways, and turned medicine in to a patient based phenomenon, something we readily embrace in today’s medical community.
At this time, medical treatments that were used included bloodletting, purging, and poisoning by elements such as mercury; often this would make the patient feel much weaker rather than better. The practice of medicine also had no real research techniques as medicine was tradition based and not as an observable science; it was in this setting that Hahnemann began to query existing medical procedures. He searched for an alternative and his solution was one based on observation, experimentation, and reasoned analysis.
