A Pioneer in Medicine.

 Samuel Hahnemann- a reformer who reinvented medicine: Few people can be described as one of the greatest figures in medicine, let alone a controversial one, but Samuel Hahnemann's radical ideas changed the face of the practice, and his concepts still guide homeopathy today. It is largely thanks to him that the idea of 'treating gently' in opposition to what was, at the time, harsh, painful, and damaging treatment was introduced to the realm of medicine. In the era that Hahnemann practiced (late 18th and 19th century), the practices of bloodletting and purges were common, as well as the administration of harsh substances such as mercury. In the absence of scientific trials, the practice relied on tradition and anecdote rather than evidence. Dissatisfied with these traditional methods Hahnemann sought to change the practices, using careful observation, reasoning and experiment. His "like cures like" method (similia similibus curentur) of treating the same symptoms that a substance can produce when taken by healthy people with a small amount of the said substance revolutionized medical thought and led to an awareness of symptom patterns. In addition, he stressed that even two people with the same disease are different people and thus need different treatment- considering the physical, emotional and environmental needs of the patient. Further aspects of his ideas include 'the minimum dose'-an idea based on taking smaller doses to 'enable the vital force to overcome the morbid symptoms with the least expenditure of energy'. As well as advocating for the use of 'provings' to study the effects of remedies on healthy people he focused on observation and documented his findings rigorously. Essentially, however, he contributed to the humanization of the patient.
