A Reformer in the Medical Field.
The man known as Samuel Hahnemann has stood as both one of the greatest innovators and one of the most criticized physicians in history. At a time when medical intervention was violent, crude, and potentially harmful to both the body and mind, Hahnemann brought to the fore a new concept focusing on a patient's natural ability to heal, the use of gentler methods, and individualized treatment. It is from this philosophy that the practice of Homeopathy has evolved, which is widely used throughout the globe.
At the close of the 18th and opening of the 19th century, the typical form of treatment in the medical profession utilized bleeding, purgatives and toxic treatments (e.g., mercury). Research and clinical trials were uncommon and ethical standards were all but unknown. Contrary to this tradition, Hahnemann called for scientific reason over mindless tradition, for an observational based, experimental, and logical system over the accepted medical practices. This approach moved away from forceful, interventionist methods toward a patient-centered form of treatment, which is what the majority of the medical field holds as ideal for medicine today.
He proposed the use of 'like cures like', stating that anything which causes a set of symptoms in a healthy individual could, in a dilute form, cure a similar set of symptoms in a sick individual. In addition to this, Hahnemann believed that each patient needed individual treatment, and that minimum dosing was the way to achieve the desired effect while minimizing harm.
Furthermore, Hahnemann humanized medicine with the use of care which required an attentive ear and an empathetic ear to learn of the patient's problem. These are principles in which the medical profession now relies heavily upon. Although homeopathy is still disputed, with much controversy over the underlying principles of treatment, Hahnemann's reform of patient treatment and care has been universally recognized.
In essence, Hahnemann was more than a scientist or an innovator; he was a reformer who changed the way medicine thinks about treating patients, of which that practice continues with Homeopathy, and with the medical profession as a whole.
