A Revolutionary in Medicine.

Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most debated but equally influential characters in medical history. Back in an age of crude, invasive and damaging medical practice he championed a radical new idea- an approach based on the principles of gentleness, individualisation and the innate power of the body to restore itself. From these principles arose the system of Homeopathy which is practiced all over the world to this day.

Hahnemann's achievement was not to propose new remedies, but to re-examine the very principles upon which the medicine of the 18th and 19th centuries was founded. He initiated a departure from brutal interventions and championed an approach based on caring for the patient. A highly topical concept today.

In those times, bloodletting, purging and dangerous compounds such as mercury were widely prescribed, and left the patient in a weakened condition instead of being cured. There were no standards for medical practice, no ethics, and the science was nowhere near developed enough to encourage reliance on observation instead of doctrine.

Driven by frustration, Hahnemann set about establishing a new medical science based on logic, reason and observation. The principles of "like cures like", the treatment of the whole person and minimum dosage formed the backbone of this revolutionary way of understanding health and healing.

Even now, his remedies and treatments remain contested but his emphasis on holistic and sensitive care, diligent observation and safer treatment continues to impact upon modern thinking in medicine and health.
