APA vs Chicago: the Basics of Citation APA Style in Academic Writing.
Citation styles are very important in academic integrity, transparency, and providing due credit to original researchers. Some of the most popular ones include American Psychological Association (APA) and University of Chicago Press (Chicago), which are used in various academic purposes.
Applicable social sciences include psychology, education, and business with the use of the APA style. It has an author-date format, in which references are provided in-text, which ensures that one can easily determine the freshness of a research. It focuses on the clarity, brevity and organized citation with the help of a list of references.
Chicago style, on the contrary, is used in such humanities as history and literature. It provides two systems, Notes and Bibliography, and Author-Date. The Notes and Bibliography format has footnotes or endnotes and the explanation can be made more detailed and the writing flow is not interrupted.
The major discrepancies are in the formatting, citation method, and usage. APA involves shorter referencing within the text and emphasizes on the year of publication whereas Chicago presumes more elaboration by the use of notes and mostly full names of the author. APA applies sentence case in titles, whereas the Chicago applies title case.
The selection of the appropriate style will be based on the academic discipline and rules. Both of them will improve clarity, credibility as well as professionalism of scholarly writing.
