APA vs Chicago: Citation Style Guide to Academic writing.

APA references lists contain cited sources only, whereas the Chicago bibliographies can contain cited and consulted sources. Moreover, APA indicates the date of publication right after the name of the author whereas Chicago does the same after the citation. There are also variations in rules of formatting author names and capitalization.


The pros of each style are evident. APA is lean and mean and thus suits research-oriented fields that give preference to the new research. Chicago style, however, is flexible and detailed and is therefore applicable in the study of humanities which need a detailed explanation and a lot of referencing.


The style of citation to be adopted is determined by the subject area and the schooling regulations. No matter which style one may choose, it is important to cite all referenced materials in order to prevent plagiarism and the lack of credibility and quality of academic work.


To sum up, it is important that the students and researchers should understand the distinctions between APA and Chicago citation styles. Learning these styles helps not only to make the writing more understandable but also to enhance the quality of integrity and reliability of the scholarly communication.
