Dissimilarties Between APA and Chicago Citation Styles.

Citation styles are important in academic writing as they provide the academic integrity, transparency, and adequate credit to the intellectual input of other scholars. Citing sources correctly enables the writers to enable the readers to track ideas, validate information and also have a deeper involvement on the research. Some of the most popular systems of citing include the APA (American Psychological Association) and Chicago styles which are used in their own academic purposes.

Even though the two styles tend to avoid plagiarism and to give credits, they vary greatly in format, structure, and use. The selection between the two is usually determined by the field of study and the school rules.

The APA style was created by the American psychological association and it is mostly in the social sciences such as psychology, education, business, and sociology. It focuses on conciseness, clarity and timeliness of research. Its author-date citation format puts directly in the text the name of the author and the year in which he/she was published and one can easily evaluate the relevancy and recency of the sources. APA also includes a list of references in the end of the document and has certain formatting conventions, e.g. title written in sentence case.

Conversely, the Chicago style, based on the Chicago Manual of Style published by the University of Chicago Press, is popular in the humanities, including history, literature and philosophy. It provides two citation systems, which are the Notes and Bibliography system and the Author-Date system. The latter is particularly widespread and is characterized by footnotes or endnotes where the citations are provided and because of the latter, comprehensive commentary is made without breaking the text. Chicago style has a bibliography and it is written in title case.

These two styles have several major distinctions. APA is mainly applied in the fields, which are primarily based on empirical studies and facts, whereas Chicago is mostly used in the fields which are greatly based on interpretation and commentaries. APA employs in-text citations and Chicago mostly employs footnotes. Also, APA has only cited sources in its list of references whereas Chicago bibliographies can contain both cited and consulted sources. The variation is also witnessed in the formatting of the authors name, positioning of publication dates and capitalization.

The benefits of each style are obvious. APA is concise in-text citations, which makes it efficient and easy to follow particularly in research intensive areas. Chicago, however, is very flexible and comprehensive in its footnote system and therefore it is best suited in complicated research in the humanities.

Finally, the choice of the right citation style is determined by the academic discipline and specifications that are given by the institutions or publishers. No matter what style is applied, it is necessary to cite it. It helps to avoid plagiarism and also makes academic work more credible and professional.

To sum up, the knowledge of the distinction between APA and Chicago citation styles is critical to students and researchers. The proficiency of these styles does not only enhance academic writing but it also enhances the integrity and trustworthiness of scholarly writing.
