Intro: A Revolutionary in Medicine.


Perhaps one of the most controversial and influential characters in medicine, Samuel Hahnemann completely transformed medicine by providing a radical alternative to the severe, invasive and sometimes lethal forms of healing present in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Hahnemann revolutionized the medical methods of his era in which bloodletting, purging and deadly substances such as mercury were rife, and science, standardised tests, and knowledge about disease were virtually non-existent. The result was a new school of thought based upon observation, experimentation and logic: 'like cures like'. This meant that substances which caused the same symptoms in a healthy person would cure similar symptoms in a sick one when diluted. This changed the outlook of medicine from targeting disease to target symptoms of a particular patient.

This is related to individualized medicine; because not two patients are the same, it is not possible to treat their conditions with the same medicine (and it would be impractical and harmful in other forms of medicine to do so), it was considered to be unethical and against common sense. It is also related to minimal dosing where the smaller the dosage the less chance there is of harmful effects. Furthermore he stressed the importance of observation in medicine.

Ultimately, the most profound contribution made by Hahnemann to medicine was the humanization of the discipline. He promoted the practice of seeing the patient as an individual requiring sensitive attention rather than merely a medical case. His principles share striking similarities with current views on patient-centred health care.

Even though the scientific validity of Homeopathy continues to be debated, the impact made by Hahnemann on medical thought is indisputable. His contribution was not just what he offered, but how he changed the practice.
