Introduction: A Change to medicine.
Of all the most controversial, yet influential, figures of medicine Samuel Hahnemann cannot be overlooked. He developed and laid the foundation for a completely new type of medicine, in a world dominated by cruel and painful treatments that may have done more damage than good. The method of healing which he developed would become known as homeopathy.
However Hahnemann's innovation was not just a new method of healing but was to make a revolutionary change in all of the principles upon which the medicine of the 18th and early 19th centuries was based. For here was a method of medicine that turned its attention away from force, invasion and habit towards the body and its ability to heal, a theory that many find very relevant in today's medicine.
As well as bloodletting and purgation at the time commonly occurring medical treatments used poisonous and weakening elements such as mercury. There was no such thing as clinical research or modern diagnosis and doctors often relied on habit and tradition. In this world, Hahnemann proposed a new approach to medicine.
With the use of observation, experimentation and logic, he brought the idea of considered and personalised medicine, which many find is as relevant in today's society, regardless of support for or objection to his principles.
