Introduction: A Doctor Who Challenged Everything.
Few figures in the history of medicine spark such diverse opinions-and such potent criticism-as Samuel Hahnemann. But just when medical treatment was often aggressive, intrusive and at best dubious, he championed new thinking; emphasizing gentleness, personalization and the innate healing capacity of the human body. In this way, he founded a system known as Homeopathy which is used by millions around the globe today.
But he did far more than promote an alternative form of treatment. The underlying principles behind his ideas challenge our perception of the practice of medicine during the 18 th and 19 th century and lay a clear path for much of modern medicine.
At the time treatments including bleeding, purging and mercury poisoning were common-weakening the patient, rather than restoring their health. At this time medical practice was still subject to neither scientific analysis nor observation. Treatment was, in essence, determined by dogma.
Unhappily disillusioned by the system as it was, Hahnemann retired from medical practice for a number of years. When he finally emerged it was with a vision that he derived from empirical testing, logic and clear reasoning; promoting new thinking with principles of 'like cures like', treating the whole patient and minimizing the dose administered. Although his work is still viewed with suspicion, his influence is indubitably part of the story of medicine.
