Introduction: A Medical Rebel.

One of the most criticized yet important physicians in history is Samuel Hahnemann. At a time when medicine was being taught and practiced as a rough, invasive, and often injurious field, Hahnemann founded a new approach to healing which advocated the principles of gentleness, an individualistic method of healing and harnessing the power of the body to do so. His new system is known as homeopathy which is practiced in many countries today.

Instead of just coming up with a new technique of healing, Hahnemann overturned some of the fundamental principles of late 18th and early 19th century medicine; he shifted medicine from invasive, traditional medicine towards an individualized method which we advocate in our modern health system. In an era where methods of healing including bloodletting, purging and treatment with poisonous substances such as mercury not only often weakened but hurt patients, and medicine relied on an almost non-existent method of scientific trial and testing, and solely on tradition rather than evidence or observation.

It was when questioning established methods of healing that Hahnemann decided on devising a new method of treatment that relies on acute observation, logical and careful experimentation.
