It is probably impossible to be involved in health and well-being on any level without at least hearing of Samuel Hahnemann – in all likelihood one of the most widely respected, yet bitterly disputed men to have contributed to medicine. When there was a great deal of harm being done within the field of medicine-often to the patients in question!-Hahnemann presented the medical world with a refreshing yet radical alternative: a way of dealing with sickness based on nature's own principles, individual care and an understanding of our body's inherent abilities to heal. Through these ideas he founded the basis of Homeopathy.

More than just another method of treatment, he questioned the underlying beliefs of 18 th and 19 th century medicine and the importance placed on interfering with our natural processes-a key component that continues to inform modern medicine today. In his day the methods for treating illnesses included blood-letting, purging, and administering dangerous chemicals (which in many cases included mercurial compounds!), a treatment often so debilitating to the patient that it left them less healthy than they had been to begin with. The world of medicine in that era was not yet influenced by the scientific and empirical models that we expect today; tradition and common practice took priority over testing and research, which became the background from which Hahnemann began his re-examinations. In this era of tradition and dogma, Hahnemann challenged all the assumptions held by his contemporaries and began experimenting and discovering ways to make the body heal itself, from the bottom up. From this evolved the principles of similia similibus curentur ('like cures like'), treating individually, using minute doses, and patient-watching: the foundation of Homeopathy. No matter how you perceive it today, there is no doubt that Hahnemann’s influence still remains within the field of health-care today.
