Introduction: a Medical Revolution.
It would be no exaggeration to say that Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most debated yet most famous figures in medical history. While treatments were often crude and painful in his time, and did at times more harm than the illness they were intended to treat, he brought about a revolutionary new outlook on medicine, concentrating on gentleness, the individuality of the patient and the body’s natural tendency to heal itself. From this revolutionary approach to medicine came Homeopathy, which is practiced by millions worldwide.
It is not just treatments that he revolutionized; he challenged the very basis of medicine at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries, bringing focus away from aggressive interventions and toward individual care, an idea which remains in the mind of medical practitioners today.
His contemporaries used such treatments as bloodletting, purging, and administering poisonous substances such as mercury. These treatments were at times debilitating and often more damaging than the illness. Medical science had no clinical trials, it was dominated by old traditions.
Disenchanted with all this, Hahnemann stepped out of medical practice, only to return with new ideas based upon observation, experimentation, and reasoning.
