Introduction: A Medical Revolutionary.
Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most controversial yet impactful doctors throughout history. While his treatments and practices were unlike any before them and at times completely antithetical to the current practices of medicine, he presented a completely new system of healing based on a desire for gentleness, individual treatment, and the body's natural healing ability. His work is the basis for the practice of homeopathy still performed today.
Hahnemann didn't simply present a new system of treatment, but fundamentally questioned medicine in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The time before Hahnemann was defined by bloodletting, purging and the administration of noxious chemicals such as mercury, all of which only weakened the patient. Medicine in general lacked a system for clinical trials and relied on theory and tradition rather than observation and experimentation.
These systems of treatment eventually wore on Hahnemann until he devised his new system of treatment, based on observation and experimentation. "Like cures like" was the guiding principle of his new treatment method; substances which were able to produce symptoms in a healthy body could also cure similar symptoms in a sick person by the use of highly diluted remedies. He also focused on a more individual treatment; each person is unique, and the illness also differs in each person. He emphasized minimum dosage of medicine and stressed the importance of observation and early methods of experimentation. The practice became not only about the patient, but about humane and empathetic treatment as well.
Though his system is still disputed today, there is no question that Samuel Hahnemann changed medicine. His work has laid the groundwork for a new medical revolution that emphasized not only a specific way to treat sickness, but a new way of thinking about health, sickness, and human medicine.
