Introduction: A Medical Revolutionary.

 

Samuel Hahnemann stands out as one of the most polarizing but important people in the history of medicine. During a time when medicine relied on drastic procedures, an aggressive approach, and even harmful substances, he introduced a groundbreaking concept; medicine based on simplicity, individuality and the body's natural healing ability which developed into the system of medicine we know today as homeopathy.

During the late 18th and early 19th century the medical practices were dominated by techniques such as bloodletting, purges and potentially dangerous substances such as mercury. Little was known about disease process and with lack of proper clinical trials medicine was not the evidence based field that it is today but instead driven by tradition. It was into this world that Hahnemann challenged accepted medical practices.

Some of his more radical theories include the principle that 'like cures like' (similia similibus curentur), meaning that a substance which causes disease in the healthy can also cure similar diseases in the ill in small doses. This introduced the notion that labels of disease are to be ignored in favour of symptom pictures.

Hahnemann was also a proponent of treating the individual rather than disease. His belief that every patient is an individual, regardless of their label was championed with carefully gathered information, detailed recording of symptoms and the use of minimized dosing due to patient health and safety.

His theories and procedures may not be proven as the basis of scientific evidence based medicine, however, there can be no dispute over the general impact that he has had. Through observation, and patient care he inspired a more human aspect into the practice of medicine and challenged the norm.

Samuel Hahnemann's greatest achievement lies not in what he could treat but more importantly the way he made medicine rethink the patient and treatment.
