Introduction: A medical revolutionist.

Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most argued and one of the most famous and influential medical revolutionaries. At a time of crude, dangerous and invasive methods of treatments of illness and disease, Hahnemann proposed a revolutionary idea based on humanity, individuality and self-healing. His idea led to the development of Homeopathy which is still applied in various parts of the world.

In late 18 and early 19 centuries medicine had developed a philosophy and science based upon harmful and invasive treatments such as bleeding, purgation, bloodletting and using many different poisons (such as mercury etc.) in attempts to combat diseases. At that stage science was still quite primitive and without regulated testing of drugs, this means treatments were often performed based on historical tradition rather than experimentation. Hahnemann challenged these views and looked to science with an approach based upon observation and experimentation and rational thinking.

One of his famous ideas was 'like cures like', this means that substances that causes certain symptoms in the healthy patient could actually heal people in very minute quantities if it produces similar symptoms in that person. His system also emphasized careful individual treatment and observation, as well as treating people with minimal doses to avoid producing new ailments.

Even though his work still comes into debate amongst scientific communities and in the field of science, the role he has had in revolutionizing medicine is undeniable, his use of patient treatment, avoiding harm and observation have helped create a more humane method of treating patients.

At the end, Hahnemann's legacy is not just about a medical system, but it is also about an approach to patients and treatment, and a method of looking at patients and treatment as well.
