Introduction: Medicine's Great Disruptor.
Of all medical history figures none have sparked as much controversy or revolution as Samuel Hahnemann. The pioneer of Homeopathy believed that it was wrong that medicine at this time involved invasive and dangerous remedies. Instead Hahnemann established a wholly unique approach to medicine based on humanity and self healing. This set the basis for Homeopathy, a practice still used throughout the world today.
He questioned much that was commonly accepted at this time of a male dominated society in a world of ignorance and barbarity. He rejected the use of such remedies as bloodletting and toxic substances believing that they caused far more harm than good. Instead, based on observation and experimentation, he was determined to seek a more logical approach. His deep and absolute dissatisfaction with current practice led him to completely reimagine medicine. Instead of using aggressive treatments and treatments which aggravated illness and symptoms, the principle at the core of his philosophy was to use remedies which caused similar symptoms and to dose them with a highly diluted dose. Along with the principle of like cures like he introduced individual treatments and minimum dosage to avoid causing the sick even more pain.
Not only his treatments but his belief in an individualistic and compassionate approach to the ill are also to be credited as two of his most groundbreaking achievements. Although his methods are to be viewed critically he revolutionized and improved medical practice through his compassion and understanding of patients.
