Introduction: Medicine's Maverick.

Today Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most celebrated yet controversial individuals in the history of medicine. While the conventional medical treatments of his day were invasive, harsh, and sometimes lethal, Hahnemann presented a revolutionary and natural approach to healing that is focused on gentleness, individuality, and the human body's own potential for cure. From these ideas sprang Homeopathy, a system of medicine that is used worldwide even today.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the typical medical treatment involved such interventions as bloodletting, purging, and poisonous substances such as mercury, all of which were apt to make the ill patient weaker rather than cure them. Because the practices of the medical field had little foundation in science or clinical proof, medicine depended on tradition for guidance. Hahnemann dared to challenge these traditions. He believed in the power of observation, experimentation and logical deduction. He proposed the use of 'like cures like,' meaning that a substance which causes certain symptoms when administered to the healthy body would treat these same symptoms in an ill body, when given in small doses. He believed that the patient's needs had to be individualized as each individual patient is unique, and that tiny doses should be used in treatment to minimize harm to the body. He was the proponent of a compassionate system of treatment with a focus on understanding and tenderness, principles which are considered the backbone of patient-centered modern medicine today. While Homeopathy is still met with criticism for lack of scientific proof, his respect for human treatment, safety and observation greatly influenced the future course of medicine. However, the effect of Hahnemann has far exceeded a simple system of treatment. His refusal to accept that tradition dictates innovation remains influential not only in medicine but in all fields requiring logical thought and change.
