Introduction: Medicine’s radical pioneer.

The history of medicine is replete with physicians who are revolutionary; at times they will inspire, at others they will antagonize. Samuel Hahnemann was a physician of the latter caliber, he revolutionized medicine at a time when its methods were brutal, invasive and, at times, deadly and proposed an alternative philosophy of gentleness, individuality and the body's ability to cure itself. This system, homeopathy, is a form of complementary medicine that is still widely used today.

In the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries, methods like bleeding, purging and the use of toxic substances, such as mercury, were all practiced, and they often left patients weak rather than well. Science and structure were, and are, absent in medicine and at this time it was solely based on tradition, not empirical study. In such an atmosphere, Hahnemann was to begin to break from tradition and, instead, seek a rational, humane, way of healing.

His central philosophy of like cures like, or similia similibus curentur, states that substances which produce symptoms when given to a healthy person can, when diluted many times, cure illness. This would mean that, instead of diagnosing a disease, the physician's treatment was based on observing symptom patterns within the individual patient, rather than a general label of illness.

Hahnemann felt it was paramount that no two individuals are the same and stressed that in treating patients all aspects of a persons being, (physical, mental and environmental), needed to be taken into account, along with minimal dosages for safety.

His other principles involve rigorous observation and experimentation, "provings" were used in early times to test substances upon a range of people so that one could learn of the range of their potential effects.

Hahnemann's greatest achievement was, undoubtedly, the humane revolution in medicine which, essentially meant the doctor treated the individual and not just the disease.

Though his methods are now regarded as unscientific and controversial, Hahnemann has left his mark on medicine in his focus on individualised care and the practice of empathy and observation.
