Introduction: Medicine's Rebellious Mind.
Of all the famous people who have left a mark on the practice of medicine throughout history, Samuel Hahnemann is arguably one of the most controversial, yet influential. At a time when medical treatments were painful, intrusive and often caused more harm than good, Hahnemann developed a fundamentally new system that valued the healing power of the body itself as well as providing gentler, individually tailored, more holistic treatments that today form Homeopathy.
Hahnemann challenged not just existing treatments for diseases, but challenged the fundamental basis on which 18th and 19th century medicine worked. At a time when medical treatments ranged from blood-letting and purging to poisons such as mercury he proposed that these were just weakening sick people further. There was no clinical research, no scientific knowledge about diseases and medical interventions were guided not by observation but by tradition and lack of imagination. Disillusioned with these treatments he gave up practice for some time and came back to medicine with a new theory that he developed through careful testing, logical deduction and thorough observation.
At the core of his theory is the principle that in healthy humans, those substances that cause certain symptom can, in minute doses, be used to treat those same symptoms in those who are ill. These were ideas he developed further into the individual treatment of the patient, the use of minute doses and careful clinical observation using "provings" (a structured way of discovering how different remedies effect healthy individuals).
It is fair to say that as well as reforming medical practice it was also Hahnemann himself who put an emphasis back into how doctors approach people: that they are more than simply the cases that walk in their consulting rooms but complex beings with a unique set of physical and psychological factors surrounding them.
The arguments over whether homeopathy itself is a valid medical treatment still continue but the influence that Hahnemann himself and his groundbreaking approach towards medicine will continue to carry influence for the foreseeable future.
