Introduction: Medicine's Revolutionary thinker.

It is frequently claimed that Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most controversial yet one of the most influential individuals in the history of medicine. When patients were treated through harsh and at times, toxic and harmful procedures, he initiated a new approach-an approach based on gentle methods, individual treatment and the inherent healing capabilities of the body. His work formed the basis of Homeopathy which to this day is used around the world.

At a time where bloodletting, purging and treatments with mercury were prevalent and where without any controlled studies and little knowledge of the medical system, they were often found to be doing more harm than good, Hahnemann sought a new form of healing which was humane, logical and based on observation and experimentation. Central to his system was the theory of 'like cures like' where substances causing symptoms in a healthy person could, when given in minute doses, treat identical symptoms in a sick person. He advocated individualised treatment and the theory of minimal dosage.

One of his greatest contributions was the 'humanisation' of medicine-treating patients with sensitivity and listening to their needs and acknowledging their uniqueness-a fundamental principle of present day patient centred healthcare. Even though Homeopathy is subject to ongoing scientific debate, the underlying emphasis on safety, observation and individualisation had a profound effect on the development of medicine. Hahnemann's work represents more than just Homeopathy, through challenging the traditional methods and beliefs he had a tremendous impact on medicine.
