Introduction: A Paradigm Shift in Medicine.

Of all of the influential but controversial characters in the history of medicine Samuel Hahnemann surely takes pride of place. In a time of aggressive and painful medical treatments Hahnemann was responsible for initiating a completely different kind of practice based on gentleness and individualized and a belief in the self-healing capacity of the human body. It is based on these principles that homeopathy developed-a system of medicine that still operates worldwide today.

Not only was Hahnemann suggesting an alternative treatment modality, but in doing so he challenged the medical establishments of the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries fundamentally by encouraging a shift away from intervention-oriented treatments towards a system of patient-oriented care which is a concept integral to modern medicine.

Back in the days of bloodletting, purging and use of toxic remedies such as mercury patients were often rendered much weaker than the diseases they were suffering from after suffering painful treatments. Clinical trials did not exist and treatments were based on tradition and intuition. It was this kind of practice that Hahnemann rejected before returning to the medical practice in search of a more humane system based on his own reasoning, experiments and observation.
