Introduction: A Reformer in the Medical World.
Few doctors stand out as controversially or as significantly as Samuel Hahnemann. In a period in which medical practices were often cruel, intrusive and often did more harm than good, he proposed a medical concept drastically opposed to the methods being employed - a concept based on kindness, and individual treatment, and reliance on the bodies' own capacity to heal. He became the father of Homeopathy, a medical practice still utilized around the world today.
Rather than presenting a new treatment, he proposed a new model for medicine. Moving medical thinking away from aggressive intervention and toward a patient-based system – this idea still continues to mold modern medicine.
In Hahnemann's time, practices such as bloodletting, purging and the administration of toxic substances such as mercury actually weakened the patient, rather than restoring them to health. Medicine had no established ethical framework, no scientific evidence to support its claims and no understanding of illness – medicine had become little more than tradition.
Disenchanted with these ideas, Hahnemann created a new approach to medicine built upon a sound methodology – careful observation, experimentation and logic. Based on principles such as 'like cures like', the treatment of the whole person, and the minimisation of dosage, the philosophy he developed went against every established medical convention.
Despite controversy surrounding the efficacy of his methods, his contribution to medical development – through emphasis on the well being of the patient and the development of a non-harming medicine based on observation - still continues to echo, and the contribution of Samuel Hahnemann is far beyond a mere treatment system; it is a revolution in understanding patients, the human capacity for healing, and medical thinking.
