Introduction: A Revolution in the Medical Field.
Samuel Hahnemann remains one of the most debated and yet most inspiring figures in the field of medicine. He advocated a more compassionate approach at a time when medicine tended to be rough, aggressive and, at times, life-threatening. From this new approach came the basis of homeopathy, a form of medicine practiced all over the world even today.
The work of Hahnemann not only introduced a new approach to medicine, but also an all new way of thinking at the time in late 18 and early 19 th century. He proposed a change in the medicine field from aggressive treatments to patient-oriented treatments, an idea that continues to inspire modern medical treatment even now. At the time treatments for diseases and ailments were based on the purging, bloodletting and the use of substances like Mercury that made patients weaker rather than heal them and science at the time had yet to begin clinical trials of medicine, thus basing treatments on tradition and not on scientific observations. It was during this period that Hahnemann introduced a new idea. Dissatisfied, he ceased practicing for a period before resuming with the proposal for an all new way to heal based on the practice of observation, experimentation and logical deduction that introduced his new principles such as, 'like cures like', treatment to individual patients and minimum dosage. Although his practices continue to be debated today his work remains to be influential and to have brought about more a safer, observing and humanistic approach to medicine.
