Introduction: A Revolutionary Doctor.

Samuel Hahnemann stands out as one of the most influential-and at times, controversial-figures to emerge from the history of medicine. Faced with the often brutal, intrusive and harmful practices of conventional medicine, Hahnemann presented a unique alternative, based on a philosophy of natural healing, individual treatment and a patient's inherent power to heal. These concepts would form the bedrock of Homeopathy, a therapeutic practice that continues to be studied and applied worldwide.

Far from offering merely another method of treatment, Hahnemann presented a completely new perspective for 18th/early 19th century medicine. He moved the focus of treatment from the body's system of defence mechanisms to an individual approach which is still highly relevant to today's healthcare sector. In those days, medicine was dominated by treatments such as bleeding, purging and the ingestion of poisons, such as mercury; treatments which often left patients weaker, rather than curing them. At this point, medicine lacked any form of scientific testing or ethical guidelines, and had a limited understanding of how disease functioned; methods were based on traditional practices, rather than on observation or evidence. It was from this broken system that Hahnemann, through questioning and an evidence-based logical approach, would develop his new thinking; "like cures like", individual treatment, and the use of extremely minimal doses were truly revolutionary concepts. Though controversial, Hahnemann’s role inpatient care, the safety movement, and the act of observation is undeniable, his work not so much on how treatment is delivered, but the way that medicine views healing.
