Introduction: A Revolutionary Figure in Medicine.
The physician, Samuel Hahnemann is undoubtedly one of the most controversial, yet one of the most renowned physicians in history. This medical man developed a system and belief unlike any other during a time where treatment involved harsh, invasive and harmful therapies-a philosophy based on kindness, the individual and the body's natural capacity for healing. His development of Homeopathy is still used today throughout the world.
During the late 18 th and early 19 th century medical treatments involved dangerous and outdated methods such as blood-letting, purgation and poisonous substances such as mercury. Medical understanding was minimal and treatments were more traditional than evidence based. During this era, Hahnemann, being an anomaly, devised a new theory based on observation and logic after walking away from traditional practice only to discover and prove his new theory. His main principles involved like-cures-like which suggested that whatever produced a symptom in the healthy would produce that same symptom in the sick when administered in minimal amounts and also that every case is different. He also encouraged and proved the idea of minimum dosage so the medicine would not cause more harm than good.
Apart from the theories developed on his philosophy Hahnemann developed empathy within medicine by emphasizing on patient centered care. Although his theories have been critically questioned with no scientific explanation he inspired and encouraged patient centered care within medicine.
Therefore, Hahnemann wasn't only a reformer in medicine but a true revolutionary for all patients and doctors today.
