Introduction: A Revolutionary in Medicine.

Of all the figures in medical history few provoke such controversial discussion yet at the same time such deep respect as Samuel Hahnemann. He introduced an entirely new concept in medicine where he offered the body natural healing, he treated with gentleness and in a way that tailored the cure to the individual; these were the ideas which formed the basis of homeopathy, a practice which today is used all over the world.

During the 18 th and early 19 th century medicine was a system dominated by treatments such as blood-letting and purging and poisonous substances such as mercury were often given to patients for any affliction. With an obvious lack of scientific knowledge in disease mechanisms or controlled clinical trials, often medicine did more damage than good. However, it was within this society that Hahnemann promoted observation, experiment and logic as ways of overcoming these harmful practices and revolutionizing the world of medicine.

Central to Hahnemann’s theory was the principle that "like cures like", that is substances that produce similar symptoms in a healthy body will in minimal doses cure similar symptoms in a sick one, and another fundamental principle was that treatments had to be suited to the individual and to be given in very small doses so as to minimize harmful side effects.

His more significant contribution however was that he put humanity back into medicine, he cared about his patients, he listened carefully to what they had to say and treated each person as an individual with specific needs-values which we still hold dear today in modern medicine although some aspects of homeopathy continue to face opposition on scientific terms; his stress on safe practice and the importance of the individual have made their mark on medicine.

Finally, it may be that Hahnemann was more than just the father of homeopathy. He may have been a pioneer of challenging conventional wisdom and putting the individual at the forefront of treatment and thought and these ideals continue to influence many aspects of modern life.
