Introduction: A Revolutionary in Medicine.
Samuel Hahnemann can perhaps be regarded as one of the most disputed yet vital men in the history of medicine. During a time when medicine could be barbaric, intrusive, and potentially more dangerous than cure, Hahnemann introduced new thinking through a holistic approach that focused on softness, individuality, and the body's inherent healing capacity. The method became the genesis of homeopathy, a medicine that still to this day has practices around the globe.
He went against the norms of medicine in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. While conventional medicine was based around ideas like blood letting and harmful substances like mercury, Hahnemann saw through these techniques and started to question whether they were effective and if they caused more harm than good. In an era before the presence of modern clinical trials or science based studies, he used observation and experiment to prove his theories and believed strongly in logic.
His principle 'like cures like', suggested that if a substance could create illness in healthy people then extremely diluted versions of that same substance would cure the illness in the sick. He also brought in other ideas of treatment such as individualization of treatment, giving small doses and also had a patient centred view of medicine.
Even though some of his ideas are still highly questioned, there is no doubt that Hahnemann had an effect on medical thought and made doctors in the future consider things like safety and observation a lot more.
