Introduction:A Revolutionary figure in the history of medicine.
Samuel Hahnemann remains an extremely divisive and profoundly important figure throughout the course of medicine. At a time in the history of healing where medicine was invasive and harsh, even deadly, Hahnemann pioneered a new philosophical approach; one of gentleness, individual care and the body's ability to naturally heal itself. His work established the practice of Homeopathy which is widely used throughout the world today.
Medical treatments in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were harsh and crude, with many treatments consisting of violent bloodletting, severe purges and harmful compounds such as mercury. Treatments such as these did more to harm patients than to heal them as they ultimately weakened patients rather than aided their recovery. There was no rigorous medical structure and no form of clinical trials. Medicine of this time consisted more of tradition than evidence. Hahnemann was challenging the established order of medicine.
The principle which "like cures like" or similia similibus curentur was his most famous contribution. His theory that substances causing symptoms in healthy people would help alleviate the symptoms in a sick person when given in minute doses completely altered the perspective of medicine, paving the way for a more symptom-oriented, personalized system of healing.
Hahnemann realized that no two patients are ever the same, even with the same diagnosis and that individual factors, both physical and emotional, along with environment, and minute doses should be utilized to ensure that all patients are treated, not just as diseases, but as individuals in order to maximize patient safety and reduce harmful side effects.
He urged rigorous observation and experimentation. Hahnemann used 'provings' where substances were given to healthy individuals in order to discover what affect they would have-a crude form of early clinical research.
Most of all Hahnemann succeeded in humaneizing the practice of medicine by making doctors see patients as individuals, not just diseases.
Though his method remains somewhat controversial, Hahnemann's impact on medicine cannot be overstated and continues today in the principles of empathy, observation and individuality in medicine and beyond.
