Introduction:A Revolutionary in the Field of Medicine.

The name Samuel Hahnemann is, without a doubt, among the most notable but most controversial names to enter the history of medicine. While the practices in medicine then were harsh, sometimes inhumane and often damaging, he introduced a new philosophy of healing that centered on compassion, individualized treatment, and the capacity of the human body to heal itself. This system of medicine is known as Homeopathy, and is still in use across the globe.

In the late 18 th and 19 th centuries, medicine was far from what is considered scientific today. Treatments such as bloodletting, purgation and using harmful substances such as mercury were a common practice that did more damage than good. Amidst such traditions, Hahnemann had questions about the current ways of practicing medicine and called for a change from tradition-based medicine to a system of medicine based on observation, reasoning and empirical experiments.

Amongst his notable contributions is "like cures like" (similia similibus curentur) which proposes that substances that causes similar symptoms to those found in a diseased body can be used to treat these symptoms, only in extremely minute doses. Even though this theory remains debatable, it opened a way for a more symptom-based and patient-oriented treatment.

Another of Hahnemann's contributions was personalized medicine in which he asserted that not all patients are the same, not even two cases of the same disease. Physical and mental symptoms as well as environmental factors would be taken into consideration when considering treatment. Associated with this theory was also the use of minimal doses in order to reduce harm and his emphasis on careful observation.

But more than anything, Hahnemann made medicine more humane; it focused on the individual, not the case and that in turn paved way for patient-centered care.

Regardless of whether or not homeopathy stands up to scientific scrutiny, the legacy of Hahnemann can surely not be disputed. His teachings about empathy, observation and the care of the individual has found its way even in the current understanding of the human body and disease.
