Learning the APA and Chicago Citation Style.
The citation styles play a critical role in the academic writing because they guarantee the scholarly integrity, transparency, and the due credit to the work of other researchers. Using correct sources enables the writers to enable the readers to follow the ideas, confirm the information, and become more immersed in the research. Some of the most popular styles of citation include APA and Chicago, which are supposed to be used in various academic purposes.
The APA style is the style that was created by the American Psychological Association and it is commonly used in the social sciences including psychology, education and business. It has an author-date structure, in which the name of the author and the year he or she published it are placed in the text. It is easy to find sources quickly, and the value of the recent research is indicated. APA employs a reference list on the end as well, and stresses on clarity, conciseness, and uniformity.
Chicago style, conversely, is found to be popular in humanities such as history, literature and philosophy. It provides two, Notes and Bibliography; and Author-Date. The Notes and Bibliography system operates by footnotes or endnotes where the writers are able to provide extensive clarifications and other details to the main body of the text without interrupting it. They have a complete bibliography at the conclusion.
The major variations between APA and Chicago are their referencing systems, structure, and application. APA is more concerned with the in-text citations which are short and Chicago is more flexible with detailed notes and general documentation. APA normally employs initials and lower case letters to show the author and title respectively but Chicago employs full names and upper case letters.
Finally, the selection of the appropriate citation style will be dependent on the academic field and the institutional policies. No matter which style is used, it is important to reference the work so as not to be accused of plagiarism. Learning the styles of citation is not only a way of enhancing academic writing but also enhancing the integrity of scholarly communication.
