Samuel Hahnemann, a Physician Who Revolutionized Medicine.

Samuel Hahnemann can be counted among one of the most controversial, yet most influential, people in the history of medicine. Working in an era where the methods of treatment often made a sickness feel like worse than it really was and consisted of harmful and intrusive practices. Hahnemann proposed an alternate method based on being kind and treating individuals as unique persons that rely on their natural ability to be able to cure them. He thereby proposed the foundations to homeopathy, which is used all around the world in the modern era.

Hahnemann approached a time when bloodletting, purging, and administering toxins such as mercury to patients was widely considered standard. Scientific practice had no real way of testing what worked, and all it really relied on was what was taught traditionally. Hahnemann wanted to find a rational and observational way to try and heal illness.

The system of treatment Hahnemann discovered is known as Homeopathy, the basic premise of which being 'like cures like' (similia similibus curentur) where an illness could be cured by administering small doses of a substance which caused the illness. He worked by observation, with minimal dose and individualized treatment being highly important aspects of healing. He changed the perspective of physicians on patients from cases to that of individuals that need care and are unique people. His method is seen as outdated by modern medicine, but his influence can be seen through a greater understanding of patient care and safety today.
