Samuel Hahnemann: a revolution in medicine.

One of the most contentious, yet influential people in medical history; Samuel Hahnemann began a new form of medicine in an era of debilitating, invasive and sometimes more dangerous practices. He proposed a more gentler, more individualized approach, focusing on the body's ability to heal itself and on which all of Homeopathy has been founded to this day.

Rather than offering just an alternative practice; Hahnemann challenged the very ethos of 18 th /early 19 th century medicine. This era was one steeped in tradition; blood-letting, purging and the administration of potent, often fatal substances, such as mercury. Lacking any systematic clinical trial and with only basic knowledge of the nature of illness; medicine at this time was hardly an exact science. Hahnemann sought to change all of this through meticulous observation and consideration; questioning and challenging all that came before him.

The fundamental basis of his new practice rested on the principle 'like cures like' (similia similibus curentur); it proposed that those substances which caused certain effects upon healthy patients could, in minimal doses, alleviate symptoms in the sick; and it placed considerable importance upon the need to treat patients as individuals, and to the use of the minimum dose possible in order to promote healing. This philosophy in turn laid down much of the early groundwork to move the role of doctor away from simply one of treatment and into that of compassion, patient care and observation. Although widely debated today; the influence that Hahnemann has had upon modern medicine, however, can still not be ignored.
