Samuel Hahnemann: A Revolutionary in Medicine History.
Samuel Hahnemann was one of the most controversial and yet most popular characters in the history of medicine. At a time when medicine was at its most invasive, at its most barbarous, and often did more harm than good, Hahnemann developed an altogether new perspective, one which was gentler, more individual and more responsive to the healing power within man himself. His system, Homeopathy, is widely practiced today.
By the end of the 18th century and the first few years of the 19th century medical practices such as bloodletting, purging and the use of toxic substances, like mercury, were standard. With very little knowledge of diseases, and without any clinical trials, the majority of medical practices were governed by tradition, not by proof, and so it was that Hahnemann first revolted against all of this. He encouraged scientific experiment and rational thought and observation.
His key concept of, "like cures like," (similia similibus curentur) proposed that drugs which can produce symptoms in a healthy person may cure the same symptoms when in a sick person in minute quantities. Treatment would be more individualistic, using smaller quantities to reduce side effects and, the sick person and not strict medical traditions, would be closely observed. Not only in his medical theories, however, but as a whole he helped to create medicine as a caring profession in this period by putting patients before his beliefs, and while some of his principles still continue to be argued by some sections of modern science, it cannot be denied that his work greatly changed the future and direction of medical thinking.
