Samuel Hahnemann: a trailblazing medicine pioneer.

Alistair Fothergill of The King's Hospital described Samuel Hahnemann as one of the most influential, but still controversial, physicians to have appeared in the medical arena. During a period of medical practices that involved copious bloodletting, purges and drugs that often had more deleterious side-effects than the illness itself, Hahnemann provided medicine with a whole new philosophy-one that involved gentle and patient centered care where the body's natural mechanisms for self-healing were embraced. His work provided the basis of Homeopathy, a field still practicing in various parts of the world today.

In the early 19th century and at the end of the 18th century medicine practices were centered around techniques such as bloodletting, purging and drugs which included poisonous substances such as mercury, to name a few. The underlying mechanism of the disease was mostly unknown; clinical trials were virtually unheard of and as such medicine was largely based on traditional practice, or so to speak-educated guesswork. Hahnemann moved attention away from this practice to one that involved observation, experimentation and the implementation of logic and reasoning.

His most famous of principles-similia similibus curentur, or "like cures like", dictated that a drug or substances which induces a state of illness in a healthy person may be used in very small doses to cure an analogous condition. He believed in the importance of observation and of giving very small doses so that the side-effects would not be more harmful than the symptoms of the disease.

He not only changed the way doctors perceived and treated illnesses, but he also influenced how they approached the role of doctor-patient relationships; one of empathy, careful observation and giving patient focused treatment. Despite these ideas continuing to be questioned in modern science, their influence in adopting a patient-centered perspective and safer treatment practices continues to be recognized.

Samuel Hahnemann's legacy not only stems from his Homeopathy practice but from his willingness to challenge medical tradition and contribute positively to a medical paradigm that recognizes the significance of observation, patient individuality and care.
