Samuel Hahnemann: A Visionary healer- or quack ?
One of the most famous- and controversial- individuals to ever be associated with the field of medicine, Samuel Hahnemann radically changed medicine. At a time when allopathic treatments were cruel, invasive, and dangerous, he presented a simple, individualized and gentle method of treatment and laid the basis for a practice still recognized and utilized today, Homeopathy. Hahnemann's revolution was far more than just a new mode of therapy; it was a paradigm shift in medical thought at the turn of the 18 th and 19 th century. Instead of an allopathic practice focused on the suppression of symptoms with harsh treatments, Hahnemann championed a healing method focused on the inherent abilities of the body and patient-centered medicine, which is still widely aspired to today. At a time when medical practitioners commonly practiced bloodletting, purging, and administered poisons such as mercury, which generally only weakened their patients, medicine was still very young and had no practice of clinical trials, ethics, or understanding of physiology to frame its treatment practices, but rather was steeped in tradition. Dissatisfied by such treatment approaches, Hahnemann began to reform the practice of medicine from its very core. He relied on observation and experiment and an ability for logical thought and in doing so, introduced to medicine, the "like cures like" (similia similibus curentur) principle. He argued that what might make someone ill, if diluted into infinitesimal dosages, could bring health. While controversial, his method urged physicians to look closely at all symptoms of the patient. He introduced the concept of individualized medicine, stating that no two patients with the same disease were ever quite the same and a true practitioner must take into account every physical, emotional and environmental factor in treating the patient.
