The APA and Chicago Citation Style Guide to Academic Writing.

Citation styles are essential in the academic writing because they allow academic integrity, transparency, and correct acknowledgment of original authors. Citing sources in the right way enables the writers to enable the readers to trace the ideas, verify the information and get more involved in the research. The APA (American Psychological Association) and Chicago (Chicago Manual of Style) are some of the most popular citation styles.

The similarity between the two styles is that they both perform the same role, which is to give credit where due and prevent plagiarism, however, the differences in the two styles are vast in terms of structure, format, and application in different fields.

The APA style is mostly applied in the social sciences including psychology, education, business and sociology. It is written in author-date format and the name of the author and date of publication are included in the text. This methodology pays much attention to the up-to-dateness of the research, which facilitates the evaluation of the reader of the up-to-dateness of the information. APA also has a list of references at the end of the paper and adheres to certain formatting guidelines, e.g. with titles written in small letters and initials to indicate the name of the authors.

Conversely, the Chicago style is usually used in the humanities such as history, literature and philosophy. It provides two citation systems, which include the Notes and bibliography system and the Author-Date system. The Notes and Bibliography type of citation, which is common in the humanities, uses footnotes or endnotes to reference the materials used as explanations of the text, giving the writer an opportunity to elaborate on the texts without disrupting the writing itself. Chicago style normally employs full author names and title case capitalization, and extensive reference list.

These two styles have a number of differences. APA employs in-text citation and Chicago usually employs the use of footnotes. APA has cited sources in the reference list only, but Chicago bibliographies can consist of cited and consulted references. Also, APA emphasizes the publication dates in the beginning of the citations whereas Chicago emphasizes them at the end. In APA, the use of footnotes is low and in Chicago it is central.

The benefits of each style are present. APA is also succinct and economical and is thus suitable in studies that revolve around data and the current research. Chicago on the other hand is more flexible and detailed, with the ability to comment in depth and reference the source in detail- particularly helpful to humanities research.

Finally, APA and Chicago are to be used when it comes to the academic field and institutional conventions. Whether the style is chosen or not, proper citation must be employed in order to achieve credibility, prevent plagiarism, and preserve the level of academic writing.

The knowledge of these citation styles does not only enhance the quality of writing but also enhances the integrity and effectiveness of the scholarly work.
