The Great Revoluntionary in the World of Medicine.
One of the most controversial, yet greatest names in the history of medicine is undoubtedly Samuel Hahnemann. Faced with a medical system that was painful, invasive, and often did more harm than good; he introduced the concept of medicine as being gentler, tailored to the individual and utilizing the body's own healing capacity. His principles are the foundations of Homeopathy which is still in use around the globe today.
It was during the late 18th and early 19th centuries that medicine revolved around bloodletting, purgatives and the introduction of noxious drugs, such as mercury, into the system. At a time when there were no clinical trials, and little understanding of the mechanism behind the disease, treatment was primarily by tradition rather than any form of scientific method. Hahnemann questioned whether the system was beneficial or not; and abandoned conventional medicine for a time before making a return with a totally new and groundbreaking perspective.
At the core of Hahnemann’s philosophy lies the principle of "like cures like" or similia similibus curentur. It stated that substances which could cause similar symptoms to the illness in a healthy individual would be able to alleviate these symptoms in a sick one in a very small dosage. This philosophy helped tailor the treatment to the individual as not only did it deal with the physical and psychological conditions, but it also took the external conditions into account as well. Another aspect that Hahnemann contributed was the "minimum effective dose," which meant using the lowest possible dose in order to create a cure while minimizing harm to the patient. His use of observation, along with early experimentation, began a new way of looking at disease, helping to contribute to the development of evidence-based thinking that was to come later in the field of medicine. It also helped to personalize medicine once again; treating people as people, rather than just as "cases," and thereby helped pave the way to the patient-centered medicine of today.
Although still controversial to this day, Hahnemann's impact on the world of medicine cannot be denied and is certainly part of our health history.
