The Medical Revolutionary-Samuel Hahnemann.


Samuel Hahnemann is possibly one of the most controversial yet revolutionary men in medical history. It was he who introduced an entirely different way of treating the body's illnesses at a time when treatments had to be drastic, painful, or indeed deadly and based it on an approach to treatment that relied on careful, individualized application, and the innate healing potential of the human body, the foundations for which became known as Homeopathy, an practice still recognized world wide to this day.

It wasn't simply about finding a different method to treat conditions but a completely new paradigm from the established medicine of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It was a departure from treating patients with aggression and towards their needs, something which has even permeated the medicine of today.

During this era many medical treatments could, at best, weaken the patient considerably: 'Bleeding, purging, and the ingestion of substances like mercury, with their poison, made many of Hahnemann's patients weaker, rather than stronger.' Research methods, moral codes and knowledge of the functioning of the body during the period of time Hahnemann lived in were inadequate; medicine was still very much based on tradition rather than any rigorous study and proof. It was this approach that Hahnemann questioned. He stopped practicing for a period but later returned, armed with a new theory born from observation and experimentation which logically developed into his 'like cures like' principle with which an individual patient was treated to as low a dosage as possible to cure his or her condition.

While he may still be a controversial figure to many people today, no-one can deny his contribution to medicine by steering it towards more precise observations, more ethical treatment, and the treatment of patients as unique, and for that alone, he warrants much study.
