The Publication journey - From the thesis completion to its publication excellence.
Finishing a thesis is an accomplishment but only its successful publication makes it truly meaningful. Without proper editing and ensuring the publication ready-state and compliance of a thesis is only half an effort. Most researchers have issues not because their concepts or research is weak but fail to take care of some minute elements like proper formatting, selection of appropriate journal, ethical standards and submission process.
In this era of intensely competitive academia, any research work is globally accessible and comparable through sources like Google Scholar. Accuracy therefore is a virtue, small mistakes are bound to bring a negative effect on submission rates and ultimately credibility of the work in the longer run. Publishing a thesis hence requires a systematic and strategy based approach that looks at the work from a completely different and microscopic point of view.
The initial phase thus should be one that ensures a solid publication strategy in place. The researcher should determine the purpose they wish to serve by publication (journal articles, books or as visibility in repositories) knowing if the goal is to establish a scientific reputation, gain recognition in professional circles or spread knowledge beyond a specific region.
The crucial part is also one that involves conversion from thesis to publishable work. Journals do not publish research that they publish as thesis due to the differences in size, format and focus of these publications. It may often involve dividing a piece of research into two or three papers, cutting out unnecessary literature review section and highlighting the primary results and discussions. Submit a thesis as a paper is the greatest and commonest mistake authors commit leading to its rejection.
Equally important is the scientific validation of the research conducted. One may need to update literature, take into consideration recent scientific trends and fill in the gaps. A well-defined methodology will also give strength to the research and increase its reproducibility and credibility in the eyes of reviewers.
The academic structure which should have all necessary components including the title, abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion and references is an important aspect. While title and abstract influence the reachability of the research paper, the style of referencing and plagiarism are critical for the credibility and respect it will get. Clarity in language also will greatly enhance the paper's quality.
A rigorous proofreading and editing will help in creating a polished manuscript. Choice of an appropriate journal and understanding its submission guidelines and the necessity for proper formatting of all the figures and tables can further reduce the risk of paper rejection. Preparing oneself to respond to reviews from scientific experts treating them as an opportunity for improvement of the work will give an edge over the others.
Hence, publication is not only the end product but the process that defines one's scientific endeavor. When a publication strategy, proper formatting, careful adherence to publication requirements, rigorous editing, and diligent review process are combined together in a systematic approach it can always achieve success in publication of the thesis.
