The research phase is critical to the entire process.

however, the research has a much lower potential impact without being converted into a final, polished piece of publication. There are many researchers who do not fail because their research is inherently weak, but instead fail to consider such crucial aspects as format, choice of journal, ethics and correct submission. In the highly competitive environment of academia research today has an unprecedented level of visibility due to sources such as Google Scholar and institutional repositories. With this enhanced profile even minor flaws in presentation structure and citation can have a considerable impact on the ability of research to gain acceptance, establish credibility and have influence long-term. In converting research to a publication an integrated, detailed and strategy-based approach is needed instead of the simple submission of a thesis. A key aspect of transforming thesis to publication is having an accurate publication plan (goal) i.e. To publish in a journal, convert to a book or to an institutional repository (IR). A research must be able to identify the requirements and make changes accordingly based on its final audience and destination of publication. Next the thesis must be reformatted and made appropriate to a publishing journal; often they are more concise than a dissertation and in these cases the original dissertation will need to be fragmented into smaller, focused research papers and unnecessary redundancies removed; the main finding must be highlighted and emphasized. Updated and verified literature is also very important to the success of publication as is a methodology that is both clear and justifiable. A coherent structure must be adopted by the research as journal publications typically follow a common format of; title, abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion and references. With clear title and abstract keywords should be used efficiently for improve discoverability. Plagiarism must be avoided by paraphrasing appropriately and citing all references correctly, while ensuring the consistency of the referencing style chosen (APA, MLA, or Harvard); and by using correct and precise academic language. Careful editing is needed to remove all grammatical and spelling mistakes and to avoid poor presentation; and so is attention to selecting an appropriate journal and the use of their submission guidelines effectively. The feedback received after peer review should be taken in the right spirit; and revisions should be made thoroughly and in the correct manner. It is important to consider ethics while writing about the data and maintain an objective and informative style. Modern technologies such as Google scholar, Grammarly and various citation managers (Zotero, Mendeley etc.) can greatly aid with the writing of a publication but they must not be seen as replacements for the intellectual aspects. Rejection is a normal aspect of publication, it is the subsequent improvement of the paper, re-submission and publication that ultimately constitutes success; beyond a publication promotion of the research (on academic platforms and via presentations) further impacts visibility and citations; the thesis must be viewed as the start of a long-term research journey and continued publication and collaboration.
