The Visionary: a Modern Pioneer.
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann is one of the most contentious, and arguably influential medical minds to have ever lived. It was a period of medical history where practitioners' methods were extremely painful, harmful and in many cases detrimental to their patients, but he revolutionized the profession through principles of humanity, individuality and an acute faith in the healing power of the human body; the foundation of Homeopathy as it exists today throughout many of the worlds continents.
The treatments common during the 18th and early 19th century consisted of bloodletting, purging and the administering of poisons such as mercury. Lack of standardization in medical testing meant the science was very much based on guesswork rather than hard evidence; what is more the practices that physicians implemented had dubious health outcomes. The physician in question challenged these practices, questioned whether patients actually benefited, removed himself and eventually returned with his radical and new medical system based on empirical observation, scientific investigation and reasoned thinking. His principle 'like cures like' (similia similibus curentur) or 'let like be treated with like', suggested that those substances that produced the symptoms on the healthy human could, in tiny doses, heal those that had the symptoms. The emphasis therefore switched to treating the whole person.
He emphasized the smallest amount needed to treat effectively in order to eliminate damage. These early experiments laid the foundation for a more logical approach in medicine; that of observation, and helped steer medicine in the direction it is today, making it far more empathetic, by humanising the subject from case history to the individual patient and essentially laying early foundations for patient-centred care. While his ideas remain controversial his influence on modern medicine is indisputable, and it is this fact that makes Samuel Hahnemann so integral to the history of medical progression.
