Beyond the Ivory Tower: Why Research Matters More Now Than Ever.

The value of research, particularly student dissertation work, for many decades seemed to be relegated to merely being a qualification – it got you the degree and it stopped there. Years of research went to university filing cabinets where nobody read them again. Now, that paradigm has changed-research has value far beyond the boundaries of the university. The contemporary business environment requires expert knowledge, innovation and data-driven decisions. There is now a huge demand from industry for thinkers and researchers to offer a high level of analysis and insight. A dissertation is a clear testament of these skills. It clearly demonstrates the ability of an individual to inquire, analyse data and form new ideas on a particular subject. It has become a form of "thought leadership". Now, in business, leadership and the ability to communicate are regarded as having the same professional value and authority as academic qualifications. Researchers who make their findings publicly available tend to be respected not only by peers in universities but also in the worlds of business, consulting, public policy, and leadership. The advent of the internet has driven this shift. An academic today can instantly share work on a global platform by writing blog posts or even simply commenting online, participate in webinar, share information on websites like the Huffington Post or LinkedIn, or in dedicated academic communities. Platforms such as ResearchGate and Google Scholar provide public spaces for researchers to establish a reputation without solely relying on the more traditional, often slow, systems of academic accreditation and publication. Furthermore, a more dramatic shift has taken place where the focus of modern research is no longer just about knowledge but also about application and dissemination. Traditional academic writing can be highly technical whereas there is an increasing emphasis on communicating value to a broader audience. The successful modern researcher can articulate the impact of their work to individuals outside their academic community; a student must be able to communicate this effectively through their dissertation. Ultimately, the value of a dissertation is in the impact it can have. An innovative dissertation can influence policy, stimulate business innovation and develop our societies. Researchers who can both conduct excellent research and communicate its findings to others will undoubtedly lead us in the future.
